Plans to reduce funding for home insulation and heat pumps have raised concerns about potential job losses and industry decline, according to a warning issued to the Chancellor. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister by Rachel Reeves and Ed Miliband, 300 businesses and organizations, including Bosch, Mitsubishi, EDF, the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, and Citizen’s Advice, have expressed worries about the impact on numerous businesses.
The Chancellor is reportedly contemplating cuts to the energy company obligation (ECO), which supports energy-efficiency initiatives for low-income households, such as insulation and energy-efficient boilers. Additionally, there are apprehensions about a substantial reduction in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which provides up to £7,500 to assist with the installation of heat pumps to encourage the transition away from polluting gas boilers.
The companies have urged reconsideration, stating that any budget cuts could result in job losses within a rapidly expanding and crucial sector of the UK economy. They emphasized the potential economic harm and the risk of increased reliance on costly imported gas, making the UK vulnerable to fluctuating gas prices that have already incurred substantial costs over the past four years.
Leo Vincent, Senior Policy Advisor at climate change think tank E3G, warned that if these proposed measures are implemented, tens of thousands of jobs could be lost, leading to the collapse of numerous small to medium-sized enterprises. He highlighted the negative impact on families’ energy bills and the missed opportunity to reduce carbon emissions, urging the government to reconsider its stance.
In response to the concerns raised, a Treasury spokesperson refrained from commenting on specific budget speculations but acknowledged the significant issue of energy costs for households. The government is committed to addressing this challenge by extending the Warm Homes Discount and providing funding to enhance the energy efficiency of thousands of low-income homes.
