Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Barbora Krejcikova from Czechia have progressed to the next round at the Cincinnati Open. They secured a victory against the fourth-seeded duo of Cristina Bucsa from Spain and Nicole Melichar-Martinez from the USA with a scoreline of 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 in the Round of 32 of the women’s doubles event on Monday. The match lasted for one hour and 33 minutes.
This tournament marks the first time that Dabrowski and Krejcikova have teamed up together. They are set to compete against the unseeded Czech pair of Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16 scheduled for Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Quebec, and her partner Sara Errani from Italy secured a victory in their match against Tamara Korpatsch from Germany and Emily Webley-Smith from Britain. The Canadian-Italian duo won the match in one hour and 29 minutes with a score of 6-2, 7-6 (2) on Monday night.
Fernandez and Errani dominated the first set in 31 minutes, but faced a tough challenge in the second set as their opponents took the lead at 6-5 and served for the win, yet couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. In the end, Fernandez and Errani displayed a strong performance with two aces, 23 winners, one double fault, and only nine unforced errors out of the total 34 in the match. They are now gearing up to compete against Chan Hao-ching from Taiwan and Maya Joint from Australia in the Round of 16.
Fernandez had a defeat against Xiyu Wang from China in the women’s singles event on Sunday.
