“Dual U.K.-Iranian Citizen Arrested in U.K. Air Base Plot”

British counter-terrorism authorities have apprehended a dual U.K.-Iranian citizen under suspicion of plotting terrorist activities at an air base utilized by the U.S. to target Iran. The incident, which led to the arrest of five British men in their 20s near RAF Fairford in western England on terrorism and explosives charges, raised concerns among Western allies. Although the men were later released on police bail, counter-terrorism units are exploring potential foreign state involvement. Prime Minister Andy Burnham hinted at a possible Iranian connection to the incident.

Iran has refuted any involvement and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran regarding the matter. In a recent development, a 25-year-old dual national was arrested in London. Britain’s senior national co-ordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, Vicki Evans, emphasized the complexity of the investigation into the Gloucestershire events, stating that all possible angles are being examined, including foreign state participation.

The police operation on Sunday was initiated based on various information sources, including a tip from a vigilant local farmer who noticed the men near the base in three vans. Despite the discovery of petrol in the vans, no improvised explosive devices were found. Collaboration between Britain and the U.S. was highlighted by Burnham, noting the recent use of Fairford by U.S. bombers for missions against Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the men’s release, emphasizing the stringent conditions of their bail. Reports suggest plans for significant damage by those involved, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinting at the involvement of a foreign actor in the incident.
