An easyJet passenger recently shared her experience of challenging the airline’s fine for an oversized bag. Louise Machin was surprised and puzzled when she was charged €58 (£51) at Chania Airport in Crete, despite checking her bag’s dimensions beforehand.
After reaching out to the bag manufacturer to confirm compliance, easyJet refunded the fee. This incident is not unique, with travelers often facing unjust fines due to discrepancies in airport bag sizers, according to consumer group Which?.
Machin, a 59-year-old from Crystal Palace, faced a similar issue on her return journey, where ground staff insisted her bag was too large. Despite her efforts to prove compliance, she was coerced into paying to avoid travel disruption.
Upon validation from the bag manufacturer, Cabin Max, easyJet reimbursed Machin. Similar cases have been reported involving airlines misapplying fines for minor deviations in bag sizes.
Which? recommends appealing if wrongly charged for bag size discrepancies. Despite easyJet claiming no issues with the airport sizers, they apologized to Machin and refunded her, emphasizing standardized sizer procedures.
In response, easyJet stated, “We maintain consistent bag sizer standards across all airports and address reported sizer damage promptly. Customer feedback is crucial, and we address concerns individually, as in Ms. Machin’s case.”
