Expressing his gratitude for being part of the games in Medicine Hat, MacIntyre, who plays as a left forward for Team Alberta, emphasized the importance of fair play, good competition, and hopes for success in the matches ahead. The games have finally kicked off after meticulous planning spanning eight years and extensive travel for 1,700 athletes.
The city of southern Alberta is eager to showcase its warm hospitality during the event. With nearly 1,700 athletes participating in ten sports such as bocce, bowling, powerlifting, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, and softball, colorful crowds have gathered at the 6,000-seat hockey arena to cheer on the competitors during the opening ceremonies.
Governor General Louise Arbour, after witnessing the vibrant atmosphere on the first day, commended the high level of activity, volunteerism, and sportsmanship, describing it as an inspiring phenomenon that exemplifies Canadian community spirit. Nicola Lambrechts, chair of Special Olympics British Columbia, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the remarkable performances of the athletes representing their provinces with pride and joy.
The city of Medicine Hat has wholeheartedly embraced the national event, with around 1,500 local volunteers dedicating their time to welcome athletes, family members, and coaches. The city, which accommodates 69,000 residents and is located 290 kilometers east of Calgary, has seen its 13 hotels fully booked to accommodate the influx of visitors.
The event, with a budget of $3.6 million funded by government grants and community and corporate donations, encompasses various aspects such as transportation, accommodation, meals, organizing costs, and additional activities for the participants. The theme of the games, “we all shine together,” resonates with the spirit of unity and inclusivity celebrated by the Special Olympics movement.
