Google to End Chrome Support for Older macOS on MacBooks

Google has announced that it will discontinue support for Chrome on older versions of Apple’s macOS on MacBook devices. While Chrome will not stop working on MacBooks and iMacs, users will no longer receive updates or security patches, leaving them vulnerable to potential cyber threats.

The changes will affect Mac users running macOS 12 (Monterey) or older, as Google will cease offering Chrome updates for these systems. Users will need to upgrade to a newer operating system, such as macOS Ventura, to continue receiving browser support.

Unfortunately, some Mac models, like iMacs older than the 2017 version and pre-2018 MacBook Air models, are incompatible with macOS Ventura. This may prompt affected users to consider purchasing a new device for continued safe Chrome usage. The update is set to take effect starting July of this year.

According to Google’s blog post, the last Chrome version supporting macOS 12 (Monterey) is Chrome 150. Subsequently, Chrome 151, scheduled for release on July 28, 2026, will require macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users must ensure their devices are running macOS 13 or newer to receive future Chrome releases.

While older versions of Chrome will remain functional, no further updates will be available for users on macOS 12. Google advises users to transition to a supported macOS version, macOS 13 Ventura or newer, to continue receiving the latest security updates and Chrome features.
