At the Diamond League track and field event in Lausanne, Switzerland, Marco Arop from Canada secured the fourth position. Arop initially took the lead but couldn’t maintain his pace in the final 400 meters, finishing with a time of 1:43.18. The race was won by Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi in 1:42.19, followed by Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati with a season-best time of 1:42.31, and American Brandon Miller in third place with 1:42.55.
Last year, Arop and Sarah Mitton were the only Canadians to reach the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where they both finished third. Arop was ranked second in the men’s 800m Diamond League standings behind Wanyonyi, positioning him well for qualification into the Final, which is scheduled for September 4–5 in Brussels, Belgium.
In the men’s 200m event, Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo of Botswana won with a time of 19.87 seconds. South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile took second place in 19.98 seconds, while Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba finished third in 20.14 seconds. American Kayla White claimed victory in the women’s 200m with a time of 22.18 seconds. Great Britain’s Amy Hunt and Nigeria’s Favour Ofili finished in a photo finish for second and third place, both clocking 22.32 seconds. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson sustained an injury during the race and had to be assisted off the track.
