Police closed a section of the M4 highway due to two separate accidents occurring within close proximity, one involving a four-vehicle crash that resulted in a person being trapped. The incidents prompted an immediate response from emergency services after the initial crash was reported at 7.28 am. Fire crews utilized hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate the trapped individual from their vehicle. Subsequently, another four-vehicle collision occurred just 200 meters away from the first incident. Responders already on the scene swiftly cleared the roadway using Gojacks, as confirmed by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
The accidents led to significant traffic disruptions, causing delays of up to an hour and a half. However, the situation has since been resolved, with all three lanes of the M4 now reopened to traffic. According to AA traffic news, motorists experienced delays of 94 minutes along the M4 Westbound stretch between J25A A4042 (Newport / Cwmbran) and J29 A48(M).
A traffic camera image captured the presence of emergency services at the crash site, with ongoing efforts to clear lane one, which remains blocked. Initially, all three lanes were closed due to the incidents, resulting in lengthy delays on the M4 Westbound between J28 A48 (Tredegar Park) and J30 A4232 Pentwyn Link Road (Cardiff Gate).
In a statement, a spokesperson for the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service provided updates on the situation. The incidents caused significant disruptions to traffic flow, underscoring the importance of road safety and emergency response efforts during such incidents.
