Two primary schools in Manchester were placed on lockdown this afternoon.
Police responded to an incident on Wood Street at approximately 12:10 pm after receiving reports of a man causing disturbance and making threats in the area.
According to a spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police, officers arrived at Wood Street in Middleton following the disturbance. A man in his 40s was subsequently arrested on suspicion of a public order offense. Investigations are ongoing.
Bowlee Park Community School and St Mary’s RC Primary School informed parents and caregivers that they had implemented lockdown procedures as a precautionary measure, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
A communication from Bowlee Park stated: “Although our school is not directly impacted, we are taking necessary steps to ensure everyone’s safety. Pupils will remain indoors for the remainder of the school day as a safety measure. Regular lessons and activities will continue as planned.
“There is no requirement for parents or caregivers to come to the school. This action is solely taken to safeguard the well-being of our pupils. Children will be collected at their usual times and locations. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”
A communication from St Mary’s mentioned: “There was a brief lockdown at the school today due to an incident where an individual was shouting towards the school. Police were promptly notified and responded.”
This incident follows a prior evacuation of Bowlee Park in June, triggered by a series of harassing phone calls, including threats to bomb the school.
The school was evacuated around 3:30 pm, and parents were asked to collect their children at the end of the school day. The incident was later deemed a hoax, and the school resumed normal operations the next day.
Just two weeks prior, both Bowlee Park and St Mary’s had a brief lockdown due to reports of an individual seen carrying a knife near Bowlee Park.
