“Over 15K Dogs Confiscated, 3.6K Euthanized Amid XL Bully Ban”

New data reveals that over 15,000 dogs have been confiscated by authorities following the enforcement of the XL Bully ban, with an additional 3,600 dogs euthanized. Despite the XL Bully breed being placed on the prohibited list under the Dangerous Dogs Act, recent tragic incidents, such as the fatal attack on a three-month-old baby in Wales, have occurred. Advocates are urging for a reevaluation of dog-related regulations, proposing stricter breeding restrictions and enhanced owner education to prevent aggressive behavior in dogs.

Fresh statistics now highlight the top 10 regions where police have seized and put down dogs. Puppies.co.uk, a prominent dog marketplace, submitted a Freedom of Information request to various police departments in the UK, inquiring about the number of dogs confiscated and/or euthanized since November 2023. Out of 32 respondents, eight, including Police Scotland, declined to provide the information.

The data indicates that a total of 15,258 dogs have been seized across the UK, with 3,638 of them being euthanized, averaging 636 dogs seized and 152 dogs put down monthly. The Metropolitan Police noted that their figures reflect their jurisdiction covering the largest population area in the country.

Recent incidents involving dog attacks, such as a cockapoo injuring a three-year-old girl and a bull breed mauling a five-year-old autistic boy, have raised concerns about dog safety. Additionally, a tragic case revealed how Michelle Hempstead, 28, lost her life after being bitten by her own dogs during a confrontation over food. Charities like the RSPCA are advocating for a shift away from breed-specific laws towards responsible ownership practices and better breeding regulations.

In response to these findings, puppies.co.uk expressed deep concern over the ongoing issue of dog seizures and attacks despite the XL Bully ban. They emphasized the importance of responsible breeding practices and proper dog care, highlighting the need for early intervention strategies and resources for dog owners to address aggressive behavior proactively.
