“Reviving Family Tradition: Sharing Meals on the Floor”

Growing up in Delta, B.C., one of my cherished childhood memories revolves around family dinners shared on a small beige mat. As the sun would set, its warm amber glow illuminated the room where we gathered to enjoy delicious Pakistani dishes, often featuring a fragrant pot of biryani or creamy butter chicken with homemade naan. Seated in a circle, we passed plates, exchanged stories, and recounted the highlights of our day, carrying on a tradition passed down by my father from his upbringing in Lahore to our suburban life in North Delta.

Over the years, the busyness of adulthood took over, and the tradition of dining together on the floor slowly faded away. It wasn’t until a Thanksgiving dinner when I was 23 that the nostalgia of those family meals resurfaced. Inviting my friends from diverse cultural backgrounds to join us, we recreated the tradition on the same worn-out beige mat, sharing a meal and stories in a circle on the living room floor.

The experience bridged the gap between my cultural heritage and our Canadian home, bringing a sense of togetherness that had been missing. Inspired by this revival, my father decided to reinstate the tradition, bringing us closer despite the hectic pace of modern life. Now, whether on the woven mat or around the dining table, we prioritize dinner time as a sacred moment to set aside individual worries and truly connect as a family.

As the sun sets and casts its warm glow through the curtains, we continue to gather on that same beige mat, reaffirming the importance of sharing meals and stories as a way to strengthen familial bonds. This tradition, rooted in my father’s past and carried into the present, serves as a timeless reminder of the power of togetherness, not just during Thanksgiving or special occasions but throughout the year, shaping the legacy for generations to come.
