A recent report from consumer group Which? reveals that the major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short compared to smaller competitors in terms of overall performance. The study, based on feedback from over 5,000 smartphone users across the country, indicates that lesser-known networks tend to offer better value and superior customer service.
Which? conducted the survey to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which are not. The results indicate that the established “Big Four” – EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone – are trailing behind many smaller players in the industry.
Among the top performers in the rankings are Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Notably, EE ranked highest among the major providers, securing the ninth spot, while O2 and Three were among the lowest-rated networks.
Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, with customers on the Big Four networks paying an average of £16 monthly for a SIM-only plan, whereas users on smaller networks pay just £9 on average. Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often utilize the major networks’ infrastructure, ensuring comparable signal and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands.
The report also highlights the ease of switching between networks, with some customers able to transition in as little as 10 minutes. One Which? member shared their positive experience of switching from O2 to a more affordable SMARTY plan, saving approximately £200 annually.
Natalie Hitchins, Which?’s Head of Home Products and Services, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger mobile firms by offering better customer service and cost-effective deals. She encouraged customers nearing the end of their contracts to consider switching to providers that offer better value.
