Stellantis and Volkswagen, the key players in Europe’s automotive industry, showcased their growing confidence in electric vehicles at the Paris auto show. Drawing inspiration from successful Chinese competitors, both companies are adapting strategies to tackle the increasing competition in the European market. Stellantis, encompassing brands like Citroen, Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat, is leveraging partnerships with Leapmotor and Dongfeng to explore Chinese technological advancements.
Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa emphasized the importance of collaboration with Chinese counterparts to enhance competitiveness. The partnership with Leapmotor has led to the development of a mid-sized electric SUV in conjunction with Opel, demonstrating the rapid progress in bringing new vehicles to market.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen’s CEO Oliver Blume views China as a crucial influencer in the automotive industry, dubbing it a “fitness center.” Although Volkswagen’s collaboration with Xpeng mainly targets the Chinese market, potential partnerships in Europe are being considered to optimize underused plant capacity. However, there are concerns about aiding rivals in localizing production and meeting European regulations.
As the European automotive sector shifts towards electric vehicles, both Stellantis and Volkswagen are exploring various ways to align with Chinese partners. While Stellantis gains momentum through its collaboration with Leapmotor in Europe, Volkswagen’s focus remains on its successful ventures in China. Analysts suggest that European automakers must now embrace China’s expertise as a learning opportunity, marking a shift from the traditional dynamic where Chinese automakers derived knowledge from their European counterparts.
