Stellantis is reportedly contemplating shutting down and selling the Brampton Assembly Plant, according to a national union. Unifor’s national president Lana Payne disclosed that the union was informed by Stellantis about these potential actions on Wednesday, although no formal written closure notice has been provided as per the collective agreement. The company is obligated to give the union at least one year’s notice in case of closure or sale, but discussions with another company regarding the plant’s potential sale have been hinted at.
Expressing disappointment, Payne remarked that the news was distressing for the union, especially for the dedicated workers at the plant. Stellantis has not confirmed any decisions yet, stating that they are gearing up for collective bargaining and focusing on finding a sustainable manufacturing solution for the Brampton facility.
Initially planned for Jeep Compass production, the retooling process at the plant commenced in January 2024 but was halted in February 2025. Later in October 2025, Stellantis informed the union about moving the Jeep Compass production from Brampton to the U.S., which would lead to the plant’s indefinite shutdown.
Unifor vows to address these concerns with Stellantis during upcoming contract negotiations. Payne stressed the irreplaceable nature of the high-paying union jobs established over 80 years in the automotive sector. The union plans to advocate for government policies safeguarding Canada’s auto manufacturing industry.
Vito Beato, president of Unifor Local 1285, affirmed the union’s commitment to safeguarding jobs at the Brampton plant, emphasizing the importance of preserving these positions. Despite the current idle status of the plant, workers are receiving income security equivalent to 70% of their income.
Local authorities, including Brampton’s mayor, have expressed solidarity with Unifor and the plant workers, with efforts being made to secure the future of automotive production in Brampton. The federal government is actively engaged in discussions with Stellantis, Unifor, and the Province of Ontario to protect jobs and ensure continued investments in Canada’s automotive sector.
