Police have provided an update on the condition of the surviving alleged shooter in the Bondi Beach shooting incident. On Sunday, December 14, 2025, at around 6:40 pm, emergency services responded to reports of gunshots at Bondi Beach. Officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command, along with other police units, quickly arrived at the scene where two men were seen firing guns into a crowd.
A confrontation ensued, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the officers and the two armed individuals. During the altercation, a 50-year-old man was shot by the police and died on-site. The other shooter, identified as 24-year-old Naveed Akram, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a hospital under police supervision. NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon has issued an update on Akram’s medical status.
Lanyon mentioned that the police investigation is ongoing, and he will only provide limited information at this time. Following the tragic events that resulted in 16 fatalities, Lanyon stated in a press conference, “We currently have a 24-year-old male hospitalized. Given his condition, it is probable that he will face legal charges. I am cautious not to influence any potential legal proceedings. I will be open to addressing inquiries later.”
During the same press conference, Premier Chris Minns expressed the need for changes in gun laws in response to the incident. Minns emphasized the importance of revising firearms legislation in New South Wales, indicating that legislative adjustments are under consideration to ensure a lasting impact. He hinted at the possibility of convening parliament to expedite the implementation of new gun laws.
Several investigations are underway following the shooting, including a joint counterterrorism inquiry led by the police counterterrorism command and a critical incident examination. A substantial police presence remains in Bondi after the attack, with more than 320 officers deployed, including off-duty personnel who have traveled to Bondi to provide support to their colleagues.
