“Autistic Boy Attacked by Dog in Park: Mother Recounts Horror”

A young boy with autism, aged five, was severely injured by a dog in an alarming incident at a park, sparking fears for his life. Joanne Goffey, 28, recounted the harrowing experience as she walked her son, Roman, home from school. A dog, suspected to be a bull breed, viciously attacked the child, causing significant injuries to his eye, ears, and cheeks, necessitating surgical intervention.

The distressed mother, a resident of Doncaster, described the unleashed and unmuzzled dog pouncing on Roman on November 6, prompting her to frantically seek help as she believed her son was in mortal danger. Recounting the traumatic event, Joanne expressed her shock and terror, emphasizing the entirely avoidable nature of the attack that endangered her son’s life.

Following the assault, Roman is now recuperating at home, with Joanne urging dog owners to exercise greater responsibility by keeping their pets on leashes in public spaces. She vividly remembered the terrifying moment when the dog aggressively lunged at Roman while they were near the park, emphasizing the suddenness and ferocity of the attack.

Despite the dog inflicting severe injuries on Roman, Joanne managed to rescue him from the canine’s grip before he sustained more serious harm. The incident led to the arrest of a 29-year-old man by the South Yorkshire Police on suspicion of owning a dangerously out-of-control dog, with the dog seized and the man subsequently released on bail pending further investigation.

In the aftermath of the incident, Roman received medical treatment for his wounds, with a particular focus on his eye injury, which remains a cause for concern. Joanne commended the swift response of the police and the compassion shown to her son during the distressing ordeal.

Emphasizing the need for increased vigilance, Joanne called for enhanced safety measures when walking dogs in public areas, stressing the potential dangers posed by irresponsible dog owners. Inspector Steve Usher echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of responsible dog ownership in preventing such incidents and safeguarding the community from harm.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical role that responsible dog ownership plays in ensuring public safety and avoiding tragic outcomes. Joanne’s advocacy for stricter safety protocols and heightened awareness underscores the importance of proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
