A significant achievement was marked as a courageous train steward regained consciousness in the hospital following a violent stabbing incident near Huntingdon.
The heroic actions of Samir Zitouni, aged 48, part of the LNER catering team on the Doncaster to London King’s Cross route, were commended by the British Transport Police during the attack on November 1. Samir sustained severe injuries in the knife assault and was admitted to Cambridge’s Addenbrooke Hospital, one of the 11 individuals receiving medical attention aboard the LNER service.
After being in critical condition, Samir briefly awoke and interacted with his wife, offering a glimpse of hope. A GoFundMe initiative to support Samir’s long-term care made significant progress following this positive development, nearing 90% of its £70,000 target as of Tuesday.
Gemma Royce, the fundraiser, shared that Sam briefly regained consciousness, emphasizing the ongoing need for support during his recovery journey. Samir’s bravery in safeguarding others during the traumatic event, including a 14-year-old girl, was highlighted by the campaign.
The suspected perpetrator, Anthony Williams, 32, faces charges of attempted murder of ten individuals on the train and is being held in custody until December 1 after appearing in court. Authorities are investigating potential links between Williams and three other knife-related incidents.
Those willing to contribute to Samir and his family’s cause can access the GoFundMe page for donations.
