A young man who disappeared from his residence was located trapped inside a chimney seven years later, leaving unanswered questions about the circumstances. Joshua Maddux, 18, informed his family in May 2008 that he was taking a brief stroll from their house in Woodland Park, Teller County.
Subsequently, when he did not return, his family raised concerns, prompting local authorities to conduct a thorough search in the area. Despite the family holding onto the hope that he might have chosen to leave town and start anew, the reality was far more tragic.
Joshua’s father, Mike, tirelessly scoured homeless shelters and camping sites nearby in the hopes of finding his missing son alive. However, their hopes were shattered in 2015 when Joshua’s remains were discovered in an abandoned cabin outside Colorado Springs. Dental records confirmed his identity.
The circumstances surrounding Joshua’s presence in the chimney remained a mystery, with Teller County Coroner Al Born stating that some questions may never be answered. The coroner believed Joshua got stuck while attempting to descend the chimney, located less than a mile from his home.
Following an investigation and autopsy, authorities determined Joshua’s death as accidental, attributing it to hypothermia and environmental exposure. Despite this conclusion, the case remained perplexing, leaving many aspects unanswered.
The discovery of Joshua’s body sparked emotional responses from the community, with his sister Kate expressing gratitude for the opportunity to lay him to rest properly.
