Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, shared her experience of coping with the loss of her mother while taking on the role of her big brother Stuart’s primary caregiver. Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily activities such as eating, transfers, bathing, and managing emotions triggered by loud noises. Despite the challenges, Simone cherishes the companionship of her brother, who has a passion for pistachio milkshakes and violinist podcasts.
Growing up, Simone felt embarrassed by Stuart’s autism and struggled to understand his unique needs. However, as an adult managing her own ADHD, she has learned to mask her tendencies and navigate their co-habiting situation effectively. By minimizing her ADHD traits and respecting Stuart’s sensitivities, they maintain a harmonious environment at home.
Reflecting on their past, Simone regrets not advocating for Stuart during challenging times, such as school expulsion and social withdrawal. Now, as his roommate, she strives to empower him, involve him in decision-making, and enhance their bond by being present and supportive. Sacrificing personal pursuits for their relationship, Simone is committed to creating a supportive living arrangement for both siblings, embracing this second chance to be a better sibling to Stuart.
Despite the adjustments and challenges, Simone values their unique bond and the opportunity to grow together in their shared journey as neurodivergent siblings.
