Two climbers tragically lost their lives while climbing the highest mountain in New Zealand.
The incident occurred on Monday night when the pair fell from the summit ridge of Aoraki/Mount Cook while completing a grand traverse.
Among the climbers was an IFMGA-qualified mountain guide and their client. The fatality was reported by the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association around 11:50 pm on Monday.
The climbers were part of a group of four, consisting of two guides and two clients, attempting the route together. The other two members of the team were safely brought down from the summit ridge, according to the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council.
Although the guide has not been officially identified by the police, they were described as a significant figure in the guiding community. The organization is providing support to their partner and children during this difficult period. Mike Daisley, the MSC Chief Executive, highlighted the busy climbing season due to favorable weather conditions drawing many mountaineers to the high alpine region, with several teams successfully summiting Aoraki/Mount Cook in recent days.
NZMGA President Anna Keeling paid tribute to the guide, emphasizing their importance in the guiding community. The focus now is on supporting the affected family, including the partner and children, as well as the wider guiding community during this challenging time.
The recent fatalities serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with mountaineering. In 2024, three climbers, including two guides from the US and Canada, perished while climbing Aoraki/Mount Cook, with their bodies never being recovered. Daisley reiterated the high-consequence nature of alpine mountaineering and the minimal margin for error, even for highly qualified professionals.
NZMGA announced that a formal investigation into the incident will be conducted in the future to understand and share insights about the tragic accident.
